Poppendeck is the daughter of Neil and Mary Poppendeck and a graduate of Talawanda High School. She went on to attend Miami University in Oxford, where she earned a bachelor of science in microbiology, graduating in 2007.
"I wanted to join the Peace Corps so I could utilize my knowledge to help improve others' quality of life," Poppendeck said. "I wanted to join an organization in which Americans reach out to form positive relationships with people in other countries."
During the first three months of her service, Poppendeck will live with a host family in Paraguay to become fully immersed in the country's language and culture. After acquiring the language and cultural skills necessary to assist her community, Poppendeck will serve for two years in Paraguay, living in a manner similar to people in her host country.
Poppendeck joins the 292 Ohio residents currently serving in the Peace Corps. More than 6,072 Ohio residents have served in the Peace Corps since 1961.
Local resident earns Virginia Tech award
Bryant Bays of Oxford was one of 37 students in Virginia Tech's College of Natural Resources, who recently received scholarships and awards totaling more than $28,000. Bays received the Victor W. Stewart Scholarship, which is given to a rising sophomore majoring in forestry.
The College of Natural Resources at Virginia Tech consistently ranks among the top five programs of its kind in the nation. Faculty members stress both the technical and human elements of natural resources and instill in students a sense of stewardship and land-use ethics. Areas of studies include environmental resource management, fisheries and wildlife sciences, forestry, geospatial and environmental analysis, natural resource recreation, urban forestry, wood science and forest products, geography and international development.

Miranda H. Burden has graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.
During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, physical fitness and received instruction and practice in basic combat skills, military weapons, chemical warfare and bayonet training, drill and ceremony, marching, rifle marksmanship, armed and unarmed combat, map reading, field tactics, military courtesy, military justice system, basic first aid, foot marches and field training exercises.
She is the granddaughter of Pat and Charles Keith of Hamilton and niece of Pam Wright of Trenton.
Burden is a 2006 graduate of Edgewood High School.

Elizabeth I. Gadaleta of Oxford received academic recognition on the president's list for the fall 2007 semester at Clemson University in South Carolina, earning a 4.0 GPA. She is a junior marketing major and French minor, and is currently participating in a semester abroad in Paris, France.
Katie Persinger of College Corner was named to the University of Indianapolis honor roll for achieving a GPA between 3.4 and 3.7 during the first semester of the 2007-08 academic year. She is the daughter of John and Judie Persinger and a biology and pre-med major.
Anna Bornstein of Oxford, a pre-veterinary medicine major, and Miranda Finch of Camden were among students at The University of Findlay named to the dean's list for fall semester. To be recognized, students needed to attain a GPA of at least 3.5 on a 4.0 scale.
