Woman injured after tile fell from Letterkenny building
A YOUNG woman had to be treated for back and neck injuries after she was struck by a granite tile that fell from a building in Letterkenny in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday) morning.
She was taken to Letterkenny General Hospital for treatment after the tile from McCarry's Bar struck her around 2-30 am. The High Road from Gallagher's Hotel to Ruth's Chemist was closed off by gardai yesterday morning causing traffic congestion and difficulties for shoppers and businesses in the area.
Speaking to the Donegal News, Garda Inspector Pat O'Donnell said an investigation was underway.
"An architect and engineer are looking at the structure to determine its safety," he said.
"This is really a civil matter," he added.
One local businessman said the closure was causing a lot of inconvenience.
"I wonder was it absolutely necessary to close the High Road. I had to go to two different parts of the town this morning to get papers because delivery vehicles could not get into the area," he said.
An irate local milkman was also forced to carry his deliveries over 200 yards to another shop.
"We understand what's happening but wonder did the road have to be closed at all," he said.
The granite tile fell from a height of six feet before it struck the young woman. The owner of the premises, Mr Hughie McGee, said he was carrying out a full inquiry to find out exactly what happened.
