Scott s cats

This has been a year of firsts for Robert L. Patton High School head baseball coach Brandon Scott.

It's the school's first year of existence, so naturally, that leads to other firsts. This is the main reason Scott, 27, left his coaching job at Freedom High School and moved to Patton. He wanted to be in on the ground floor as the new school developed.

Important to that development is the victories his baseball team managed against Freedom and East Burke High School, the first in any sports against its larger county rivals.

Patton has posted an outstanding 9-4 record in its first year and stands 5-3 in the Catawba Valley Athletic Conference. There are still 10 conference games to play before the state playoffs begin. There are four spots available in the playoffs for its conference, so Patton is looking good as the season approaches the half-way point.

Scott started playing baseball as far back as he can remember. His dad coached him all through Little League at the Glen Alpine Recreation program.

In middle school, Scott played both seventh- and eighth-grade years at Table Rock Middle School, before moving on to Freedom. His first two years there, he played first base on the JV team before moving up to Coach Tom Russ' varsity team as a junior.

He batted over .380 for his career of two years on the varsity team, and he helped lead the Patriots to a pair of winning seasons. His senior season, the team qualified for the s tate playoffs.

Next came American Legion play for three years on Coach Ron Swinks' team. The second season saw the locals advance in the playoffs, before losing to perennial-powerhouse Cherryville.

Scott hovered around a .300 batting average in his American Legion career and hit his first career homerun.

He was among 100 tryouts for the Appalachian State University baseball team, but failed to make the squad. He then became a team manager so he could be a part of the program. This was beneficial in his development as a coach.

He majored in physical education at ASU and upon graduation, became a member of the Freedom faculty. He took the baseball coaching job with the Patriots last year before moving to Patton.

Scott says the person who most influenced him becoming a coach and physical education instructor was Tom Harper, a former assistant football coach at Freedom and now head football coach at Alexander Central High School.

He saw how much influence Harper had on young people and he wanted to do the same.

As mentioned earlier, his two biggest wins were against Burke County rivals Freedom and East Burke. The Patton Panthers have also chalked up impressive victories against Fred T. Foard and North Stanley high schools, both state-ranked in polls.

Seniors Steve Dyson and Ryan Hasson have carried the pitching load, along with playing in the infield, and both have done a fine job.

The team has three members of the 2004 Southeast Regional Championship team and all are doing well. These include Dykota Speiss, Aaron Attaway and Chris Fine.

Scott says the three have handled expectations very well and are now completely focused on their current team.

I asked Scott who the most influental person in his life was. As I expected, he said his father, Sam. His wife, Karen, is a pharmacy technician and they make their home in Hickory, where they attend Christ Church.

Scott's sister, Stephanie, coaches girls' basketball at West Henderson and was a member of Freedom High School's 1994 state-championship team.

Scott would like to someday be a scout for Major League Baseball. I wish him well.
