State stalls on cancer centre
COUCH chairman Charlie Woodward says he's sick of the State Government delaying a cancer care centre in Cairns.
Mr Woodward wrote a letter to Health Minister Stephen Robertson last week, demanding to know why an independent consultant s report was running late.
In December, the Committee for Oncology Unit Cairns Hospital was told the report would take up to six weeks to complete.
But 14 weeks later they are still waiting for a response.
We are concerned that the study seems to be taking a considerable amount of time as 14 weeks have passed since your letter stating the study would take between four to six weeks, Mr Woodward said.
We are keen to see the results of the KPMG study and we hope that the recommendations that come out of it address our time-frame concerns and that the residents of Cairns do not have to needlessly suffer in the future.
Mr Robertson on Friday said the report had been delayed as KPMG had sought more information from the committee s partner, Riverina Cancer Care Centre and said the department hoped to meet the steering committee this week.
The committee is seeking state support to match the Federal Government s $8.3 million to build the centre on donated land at Reservoir Rd.
COUCH supporter Bob McGill said the community could not afford to wait any longer to get radiation treatment facilities in Cairns.
In short, we want radiotherapy here yesterday and our primary focus is to expedite the resolutions to have it here yesterday, he said.
COUCH has raised more than $287,000 toward the $20 million project.
Mr McGill said the committee was adamant the proposal should not be caught up in debate about whether or not Cairns needed a new hospital.
