Beetson boycotts league ball

Come on Artie - I suppose you'd want the invitation advertised on the internet to all comers. That would be a real farce and has been tried before. Fair dinkum mate, get a grip of yerself and move into the 21st century. Shorts and thongs are no longer acceptable for such an important occasion as this Posted by: NRL fan 4:59pm today Comment 21 of 22

I hear the saying. Since the 1800s soccer in the UK was the 'working man's game'; now some individuals I would hazard to guess earn more than the entire Broncos squad in one year. funny thing is that 'working men' earning over $100k a year go and support the Broncos......times have changed FOR PLAYER AND SPECTATOR. If Artie wants to re-incarnate the game in some suburban park with a handful of spectators in tow, then go for it. As a non-league fan i would be happy with that. Having the presentation ceromony at the SFS would prove an embarrasment; they would be lucky to get 10,000 turn up. The black-tie criticism is a non-issue and not turning up to the 100-year celebration because of the current state of referees is a very strange protest. Artie, old mate. You should of gone and worn what you would normally wear . Then they would of had to reject you entering . You could of had it planed with A Current Affair to tape the whole thing and made a big story about it. Now thats getting with the times. So it would of got National Coverage. You not up with working the modern day media to your own advantage. Sorry you missed the boat this time round. Posted by: Smithy of Brisbane 2:05pm today Comment 15 of 22

Artie is right in some respects. The reason the game is as popular as it is that it hasn't yet completely sold out to pay TV like unfortunately Union has. That access gives the young blokes of working class families the incentive to play the game and try and break into the top league. Changes to the game itself though have really placed a heavy penalty on defence to the point we have the laying all over the tackled player to try and slow the game down. Really the attack hasn't got that much better, the rules are just affording more opportunities. This puts a lot of pressure on referees to use the third ref and no wonder when their decisions are done to death with hundreds of replays and replays on the big screen at the ground- are they really any worse than before? Go to the thing Artie, you can make more of a difference by tackling things head-on rather than a lonely little protest. Posted by: Vince of Albion 2:01pm today Comment 14 of 22

First Tommy Ridonikus last night on NRL on FOX and know Artie Beetson. Both are 100% correct. half the games each week are decided by the officials instead of the two teams on display. There is too much political correctness in the game! the Media are hipocrits, first they aplaud the conduct of years gone by, calls like "catledog" in origin where you just bash the first bloke you see! the media replays it over and over again to stir up emotion. but then they savage any player for rough play if an oposing player gets injured! the media stirs up the Grapple, Crusher and chicken wing, then lets the commentaters say on live to air that the players might aswell wear skirts! the media is responsible for how soft the game has become and the NRL is responsible for letting the media influence the game and coaching the Refs to over control a match! Let the two teams get stuck into each other and keep the whistle out of the refs mouth. Posted by: brett of brisbane 2:00pm today Comment 13 of 22

Artie wants to do something for the game then come out and comment on what you can do. Spending your time critisizing isnt helping at all. Dont want to go the the function because its black tie well I dont think you will be missed. I would have thought this would have been a great opportunity to meet up with those who control the game to discuss your concerns but as a typical "what about me" Queenslander you fire shots across the border. Are you upset because you coulod have made big money if only you were born 20 years later. Old cricketers have the same issue. Unfortunately some Gala Events has these dress requirements. Its not like your Saturday treat at the local leagues club where you are the only GOD and can get away with shorts and thongs. Posted by: Nigel of Gold Coast 1:46pm today Comment 12 of 22

Get with the times people. Lets give our game a chance and celebrate accordingly. What's wrong with dressing well? What is wrong with celebrating 100 years in style? this is a celebration of all the heroes in the history of league. Artie you just need to stop having a cry over something so trivial. These sort of events are nothing more than an exercise in gratuitous self-indulgence which serves little or no purpose in building or developing the great game of league. Good on-ya Artie for seeing this event for what it really is. Posted by: James luv my team of Brisbane Home of the Broncos 1:14pm today Comment 10 of 22

When is this dinosaur going to shut his mouth and spare us from his tired old rants? Seriously, give the prop spot of his to Webcke or someone similar, and get this vitriolic old snake outta the game. Totally over it. Upset about the "black tie"? Artie, mate, it's the 21st century. If the game didn't have money, success, advertisements, sponsors and responsibility, the game wouldn't exist any more. Build a bridge and move on, okay? Good on you Artie, I am sure a lot more could be achieved by sitting down at the SCG and discussing these problems with the game over a beer or two. With everyone dressed up like Pox Doctors Clerks, thinking they will be able to rectify the games problems, I don't think so. Posted by: David of Balgal Beach 1:10pm today Comment 8 of 22

Couldn't agree more. The game today is run by money and networks. What ever happened to ethos? It is no longer talks around the cooler about what great plays, but about which players are doing what drugs and their social life as opposed to what happens and is happening on the field. I don't totally agree with Arite but the issue of fans being excluded really gets up my nose. And I was just thinking on Sunday as I watching some of the dfferent footy shows ... what the hell are these clowns doing dressed up in suits ...I mean mark geyer and gorden tallis just look at Wednesdays fox show, he was pulling at it as though what are they making me dress like this for... then some with suits but no ties. And what about the total snub of brisbane - the main history weekend and there isn't a main game in possibly the best rugby league stadium in the world. Not to mention no game over easter. This is a national competition in name only. The referees aren't the big problem. the reliance kicks our game is about carrying the ball not blooming kicks, the interchange rule and rubbing out blokes who set a poor example. If they want play and act like park galahs then eliminate them from the main game and put em back in the local park. Putting a suit on a galah doesn't make it another type of bird! Good on you Artie, why don't the players selected sit down with the NRL and discuss the future of the game. The NRL could do a lot worse than getting imput from these greats. The NRL need to remember the game was here before them and T.V. Posted by: Scott White of Sunny Coast 12:49pm today Comment 5 of 22

Congratulations Artie Once again you have made a stand against the madness that has overtaken OUR game. Admission prices are beyond reach of the avaerage working families, the players have become arrogant assholes. Any type of club loyalty is out the window as players become mercenaries chasing the almighty dollar. I may be called a dinosaur, but how can anyone embrace the Willie Masons and Mark Gasniers of today. Thankyou Artie for being down to Earth, always approachable and one of the true icons of the game. What an absolute legend! Finally someone with the guts and integrity to say what he feels without worrying about Gallop and the other lawyers and cops and ex cops fining him or bringing the game into disrepute. I agree that the game s has become an exclusive zone for events like this, and the average guy can t or is not allowed to attend because it does nt fit into the corporate image. Its about time someone spoke up about the refereeing. It is absolutely killing our game and killing the enjoyment of it. Gallop take heed, get rid of Harrigan...he is on a massive ego trip. Appoint an ex player or coach with some playing/coaching experience. Harrigan had it time in the 80 s....its over. The game has become touch football and slower due to the over officiating due to the video refs and the over reliance of technology. Rugby AFL are laughing all the way to the bank!
