Surviving sisters team up for Relay for Life

Carol Hammonds was a 39-year-old mother of one when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1996. She had one breast surgically removed and was cancer-free for four years before cancer was found on her lung. She then underwent radiation and chemotherapy, but learned in December 2004 that the cancer had spread to her liver and bones.

There are two Relays for Life in Etowah County next month. The Relay for Life of Gadsden is May 2 at the Gadsden Sportsplex. The Relay for Life of Etowah County is planned for May 16 at Southside Elementary. Fun for the children and entertainment is provided at both events.

Teams of eight to 15 people from businesses, clubs, families, hospitals, schools and service organizations participate in Relay for Life by taking turns walking on the track. Each participant is encouraged to raise at least $100 for the American Cancer Society. Last year, $64,000 was raised. The Relays hope to raise $68,000 this year.

Luminaries can be purchased for $5 in honor of a cancer survivor or in memory of a victim of cancer. Torches of Hope, which are tiki torches with purple ribbon and an engraved plaque in honor or in memory of loved ones, are available for $100. The luminary ceremony will be at 9 p.m. at both Relays. A Survivor Celebration Dinner is planned for 6 p.m. April 29 at the Hardin Center. Suz-anne Long and Brenda Carroll, cancer survivors, will tell their stories.
