Help Anti-Film Piracy Council arrest pirates
By Isah V. Red
The Motion Picture Anti-Film Piracy Council recently granted monetary rewards to seven theater and film production employees who were responsible for the arrest and filing of cases involving the videotaping of films being exhibited in four theaters in Metro Manila.
All cases involved violations of Republic Act 9239 or the Optical Media Act of 2003.
The rewards were given out to the awardees during ceremonies held at the Shangri-La Restaurant on Times Street in Quezon City.
Metro Manila Development Authority Chairman Bayani Fernando, Anti-Film Piracy Council president Ric Camaligan and chairman Remy Monteverde, and Ma. Socorro Aydinan, acting deputy head of the special project office of the Presidential Management Staff of Malaca ang, handed out the checks to Jimmy Bonita and Jay Go of Marketplace Shopping Mall in Mandaluyong (P20,000); production checkers Danny del Poso and Dennis Sadia of Solar Entertainment Corp. (P20,000); Rodrigo de Leon of Uniprom Inc. and Gateway Cinema (P20,000); and Alfred Sta. Ana and Jayron Belen, security guards of Glorietta Cinema in Makati (P10,000).
Camaligan, council president, said that the granting of rewards to theater and film production employees who will facilitate the arrest of people illegally video-taping films being exhibited in cinemas will hopefully provide the incentive for an intensified anti-film piracy campaign, especially in the metropolitan area.
MMDA Chairman Fernando assured that the MMDA will backstop and support this intensified campaign against film piracy which aims to utilize theater security manpower as well as other employees to prevent illegal taping of films.
Secretary Cerge Remonde of the Presidential Management Staff had assured council officials that for its part Malaca ang has already ordered and advised law enforcement agencies to provide manpower support to the council, the local film industry and the theaters association regarding the anti-piracy campaign.
More energy for pirates raider
Pirates, better think hard before going out and selling your contraband. Edu Manzano, chairman of the Optical Media Board, has just found a new way to keep his energy high and his senses keen on where the pirates lairs are.
He recently signed up as V.Go Powdered Energy Drink endorser. And last Friday, the popular TV-movie personality along with top executives of Tubu Food Manufacturing Corp., Ronald Pecho, marketing manager; Myrna Vivar, research and development director; Rizaldy Cristobal, operations manager; Sherley Martinez, marketing services specialist; and Mary Lorelei Asinas, Quezon City manager met with the press to tell the media on what the new energy drink means for the very hot TV game show host and the country s official raider of pirated CDs and DVDs.
According to the guys from Tubu Food, Edu Manzano was the perfect choice to endorse V.Go Powdered Energy Drink to consumers. With such hectic schedule from (even before) dusk to much more beyond dawn the TV host/actor/public servant has to maintain a high level of energy.
His overlapping schedule of official functions and show business can only be accomplished by a very healthy body and mind. The introduction of V.Go Powdered Energy Drink in the Philippine market by Tubu Food Manufacturing Corp., arrived in such opportune for Pilipinas, Game Ka Na Ba? and 1 versus 100 host Edu Manzano.
Now I can always recharge with V.Go Powdered Energy Drink, Edu smiles. Sa tulad kong always on the go, bawal ang low-bat!
V.Go Powdered Energy Drink contains the European formulated CoQ10 (AIIQ) as one of its main ingredients.
CoQ10 is a natural nutritive compound in our body. This vitamin-like substance is actually in the powerhouse of cells in the body, called mitochondria. This is where all the energy generation takes place.
I have been a CoQ10 believer since the early 80s, and I know the benefits it gives to the body.
According to Tubu Food executives, it plays such a vital role in the process of releasing energy from the food we eat. In addition CoQ10 is an efficient antioxidant, protecting cells especially the mitochondria, from free radical change.
V.Go Powdered Energy Drink also contains Korean ginseng extract, royal jelly, vitamins B1, B2, B3 and B6 for increased energy and physical health plus inositol and taurine for improved mental alertness.
P93m worth of pirated discs seized
If you don t believe me, here s a bit of bad news for pirates.
The Optical Media Board, of which Edu Manzano is the chairman, has reported that for the first half of this year, it has seized a total of 374,000 pirated optical discs in various areas of Metro Manila.
The operations have been conducted at Metrowalk, Pasig City; Antipolo, Cainta, Taytay, Bacoor, and Commonwealth public markets; St. Francis Square, Mandaluyong; Nepa Q Mart; Tutuban Mall, Meisic Mall, Binondo; LRT North Mall, Caloocan City; Frisco Market, Quezon City; Harrison Plaza; Carriedo/Raon; Seaside Bazaar in Pasay; Parklea, Mandaluyong; MHN Optic Technology Media Corp.; 168 Mall, Binondo; Divisoria Mall; Alabang Terminal, Muntinlupa; RFC Mall, Las Pi as; Value Point, Las Pi as; Lotus Mall; Imus Market, Cavite; and Makati Cinema Square.
The seized optical discs are worth P92,273,250.
Recently, OMB charged 13 suspected pirates with violation of the anti-piracy law in a Pasay City raid. A report filed by the National Police Aviation Security said the videos were packed in 27 boxes and ready for shipment to Palawan, Bacolod, Davao and other provinces.
Earlier, three suspected pirates were charged in a raid at Circle C in Commonwealth and at Home Depot Ortigas.
Now, if that doesn t scare the purveyors of illegally copied movies on DVDs and bogus CDs, perhaps they have more powerful connections in either the military, the police or someone highly placed in the business of government. And that puts Edu s efforts all in vain.
Shia and Sarah in Disturbia
In DreamWorks Pictures extreme thriller Disturbia, Shia LaBeouf (The Transformers) and Sarah Roemer (The Grudge 2) both play troubled teenagers whose game of spying on their neighbors turned dangerous and terrifying.
The voyeuristic film explores what young people can possibly do when they re stuck in their houses and the windows become their world. With the constant advances in contemporary electronic technology, Kale (LaBeouf) and Ashley (Roemer) find themselves enjoying the thrill of how easy for them to watch others until they suspected that one of them is a serial killer! Directed by D.J. Caruso of Taking Lives fame, Disturbia also stars David Morse (Proof of Life) and Carrie-Anne Moss (The Matrix trilogy). The top grosser during its opening weekend in North America, it is released by United International Pictures and distributed in the Philippines through Solar Entertainment Corp.
