When people who suffer from memory disorders do not want to follow a treatment based on medicinal herbs such as ginseng, ginkgo biloba, rosemary and green tea, or on drugs, they may want to follow a diet to improve their memory. The scientists have studied the constitution of certain foods and discovered that the natural nutrients found in these foods can actually enhance the memory, as well as the other mental processes.
Fruits and vegetables are foods that improve memory, from many reasons. First of all, the fruits contain sugar that is transformed by the body into glucose. The latter represents a type of sugar that is required by the brain, in order to function properly. When the consumption of sugar is increased, the amount of glucose raises, too. This determines a further improvement of the brain functions. However, at a certain moment in time, the excess of glucose will become harmful to the brain. When this happens, people may experience memory impairment. Some of fruits and vegetables which are considered foods that improve memory are blueberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, red cabbage, kale, sweet potatoes and asparagus.
Blueberries are considered to be among the foods that improve memory because of another reason, too. They contain antioxidants, which prevent the aging of the brain and fight the free radicals. The free radicals are known to help in the development of some life-threatening problems, such as brain cancer and stroke. Such diseases represent major causes of memory loss.
Cantaloupes, blueberries, sweet potatoes and asparagus contain significant amounts of vitamin C. This vitamin is very important, because it assures that the immune system is working properly. By preventing some diseases, people are able to avoid depression, which is the major cause of memory loss. Furthermore, the fruits and the vegetables may boost the energy, fact that also leads to a decrease of the stress and depression levels.
Fish such as sardines is also among the foods that improve memory. As an important part of the brain is composed of fats, the fish oils determine an improvement in the mental processes. Sardines contain one of the most important fish oils, which is named Omega-3 fat.
Aliments that contain important amounts of vitamins E, C, beta carotene and vitamins from the B complex are also considered foods that improve memory. Vitamin E is an antioxidant that improves the immune system. The vitamins from the B complex are known as protectors of the nervous system. The most important are vitamins B1, B6, B9 and B12.
