I'm Liz Funk. I'm a college student at Pace University Honor's College, where I study English and gender/sexuality studies. I write about issues facing young people, young women, and college students. However, my excessive caffeine consumption has cost me my focused thinking patterns, thus expect the unexpected.
Although I spent my adolescence whining about the Capital Region, every autumn when the leaves fall and my first bout of homesickness surfaces, I remember what I appreciate about the Capital Region:
1. The Albany Barnes and Noble: it is by far the best Barnes and Noble I ve ever been in, with friendly staff and excellent Starbucks.
2. The innocence: I ve never believed that innocence was bliss, but the other night my friend and I practically tripped over a guy sleeping on a subway grate because we didn t see him and then we kept on walking, and it took us a few seconds to acknowledge that we (both avowed progressives and occasional churchgoers) were just emotionally blank to the concept of a human being asleep in an alley with tattered clothes and possessions in garbage bags.
3. My yoga class: although this was the summer that I was introduced to White Castle and Vitamin Water (which I ve been brought to understand is little more than sugar water), I think I ve been at my healthiest, largely from going to weekly classes. My yoga teacher, Doreen McClintock, has a private practice of yoga instruction, and is simply the best. I ll ask her if it s okay to list information on her classes here, because I ve always had a bad neck and have been in some state of muscle tension since I was thirteen, but taking her classes really cleared it up and did something for my eye twitch, too. It s totally worth trying out.
4. Stewart s ice cream: I m fairly positive that my two best friends and I ate our collective weight in Stewart s ice cream this summer. In fact, I ve eaten so much of it that I don t even really like it as much, but hell, I could down a pint of the birthday cake flavor because you could say brainfreeze.
5. Thatcher Park: I think I am going to have the author photo for my book taken at the Overlook (there, or in front of the arch in Washington Square Park in Greenwich Village).
6. My car. Nuff said.
7. The Times Union (haha ironic!). I get up in the morning and read the features section and then the rest of the paper if I feel like it but always the features section.
8. The leaves! There is virtually nowhere more beautiful in the fall than upstate New York. In fact, I d argue that it s even nicer than Central Park in the fall, which is a high compliment.
9. My cat. She s really evil and sits below my birdfeeder to try and kill innocent birds, and scratches anyone that touches her, but I think she has some really lovable qualities although I don t quite know what they are. And my dog, because he unconditionally loves and I think that we as humans could learn a lot of him, although this could be because his brain is the size of an apple.
10. Um, my family? Even though I hate talking on the phone, I try to talk to my mom every day and my sister a few times a week, even though every college guide available emphasizes that this is the recipe for co-dependency and homesickness. Three words: wah wahh wahhhh.
I m certain that there are other things that I can t think of because it s nearly two in the morning, so I ll keep you posted as my bouts of longing for the 518 come in future waves.
