Microsynth AG is one of a few laboratories accredited by the Swissgovernment to perform tests for BVDV. The laboratory has signedexclusive contracts with several Swiss cantons accounting for aboutone-third of the Swiss cattle population to perform both initialtests based upon tissue samples and follow-up tests to verifypositive results using blood samples. QIAGEN's cador BVDV assay is based on the polymerase chainreaction (PCR) technology and can detect even tiny traces of viralRNA from a wide range of biological samples. Unlike traditionalmethods, PCR enables the direct detection of the pathogen itselfindependent of the immune status of an animal, which is alsoimportant for the screening of newborn calves. The assay enables thetesting of pooled samples and is suited for high-throughput settings.It has already proven successful by Microsynth in screening 50,000samples from young animals before their first summer pasture. Duringthe main phase of the eradication program, Microsynth expects toprocess as many as 350,000 biological samples in just three months.The agreement also covers continuing screening of newborn calvesthrough October 2009.
The success of the eradication program depends on the identificationand elimination of all animals persistently infected with BVDV, asthe disease often occurs without symptoms and thus frequently remainsunnoticed. The institute serves as thegovernment-approved official BVDV reference laboratory forSwitzerland and partnered with QIAGEN during the development of thePCR-based cador BVDV assay. This molecular test has set standards forBVDV screening in Switzerland and is widely used for confirmatorytesting of positive samples, which have been identified usingtraditional immunological assays.

The disease can lead to a dramatic reduction in theinfected animal's weight.
