LOUISVILLE Derrick Caracter, the diet expert on the University of Louisville basketball team, played impressively during the Cardinals' Red-White scrimmage Monday night in front of nearly 12,000 fans in Freedom Hall, but that doesn't mean he'll be on the court when UofL meets Carleton University in its opening exhibition game Monday night.
UofL coach Rick Pitino said afterwards that Caracter, who had 21 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots in 39 minutes for the White team in its 87-82 overtime loss to the Red squad, still has to lose eight pounds before being assured of playing time next week against Carleton University and Georgetown College (Wednesday). And Pitino isn't at all sure that's going to happen.
The 6-foot-8 Caracter now weighs 278.
"We want him at 265, but we would take 270," Pitino said. "He has a long way to go before we'll let him step on the court. He's the type person who would rather cram for an exam than study for two weeks. I think he'd look good in a suit on the bench the first couple of exhibition games helping us coach, because that's where he's going to be."
Told of Pitino's remark, Caracter said: "I do look good in a suit, but I can't be on the bench."
Caracter added that he's sure he can lose the amount of weight Pitino has demanded.
"I'm not going to eat anything after this game, just go home and go to sleep," Caracter said. Regardless of his weight, there's no doubt he's in much better shape than he was at this time last year, when he labored to get up and down the floor for more than a few minutes at a time.
"I feel a lot better," he said. "Last year I was on the Jenny Craig diet, fasting and just trying to eat less. This year over the summer I got to work out, really work on getting into condition, really work on my moves."
The standouts in the scrimmage were starting forward Terrence Williams and a couple of newcomers, guards Preston Knowles and Reginald Delk, but Knowles isn't likely to see much action once the season starts and Delk must sit out this season after transferring from Mississippi.
Williams scored 24 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, both game highs, for the victorious Reds while also handing out seven assists. He played all but one minute.
He was joined on the Red team by two other probable starters forward Earl Clark and center David Padgett. Another starter, guard Edgar Sosa, had 18 points for the White team.
Knowles, from Winchester, had 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals in 44 minutes. He hit 3-of-6 three-pointers. Delk, the nephew of former University of Kentucky standout Tony Delk, contributed 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two steals for the losers.
"By far the three who stood out the most to me were T-Will, Knowles and Delk," Pitino. "All three played extremely well. Preston was terrific because he's a tough kid who plays good defense. He's mentally and physically very tough. That doesn't mean he'll play a whole lot this year, but if any of our guys have an injury or a problem, he's going to step up and be totally capable of playing.
"And I think Delk is a terrific basketball player. We thought we were just getting a spot-up shooter and just in a very short period of time, he's improved tremendously. Improved his one-on-one moves, he runs well, he shoots well. We didn't know he was that good an athlete; he's a much better athlete than we anticipated."
On the flip side, Pitino was critical of Sosa's approach.
"Edgar just tried to get shots for himself and he didn't make anybody on the White team better," Pitino said. "He had that problem in the first half of last season, corrected it and was a terrific point guard at the end. He reverted back to the beginning of last year, so we've got to get him back to where he makes other people better. When he penetrates, if someone helps (defensively) he's got to dish, and he didn't do that tonight."
And Sosa says he expects to hear about it in no uncertain terms when practice resumes Thursday.
"He got on me after the game," the sophomore said. "He said I'm trying to draw the contact every time instead of just driving in and sometimes the corner is wide open. I'm trying to get to the free throw line every play and I'm not supposed to do that. I'll definitely correct it. I know he's going to scream at me a lot and I've just got to take it all in and get ready for the exhibition game."
Regulation ended in a 73-73 tie when Will Scott missed a last-second three-pointer under pressure. Williams scored 11 of the Reds' 14 points in overtime, including two three-pointers.
Starting guard Jerry Smith sat out to rest what Pitino termed a "minor" thigh bruise. Forward Juan Palacios, who suffered a torn ACL ligament in his knee on the second day of practice, is out for 6-8 weeks.
"We got a lot out of that, especially from a conditioning standpoint," Pitino said. "We used this as a conditioner more than anything, and our guys were exhausted at the end of the game.
